A very rare, interesting and characterful horn by Kalison, Milan, Italy, somewhat 'cosmetically-challenged' but in good playing shape.
This is definitely yet another ‘sleeper’ horn!
'Sleeper' means a modestly priced horn that looks rather tatty in a few places (in this case, due to some minor dents that are inacessible to the repairman) but plays very well indeed.
Made mostly of copper, (although it looks like gold-brass) it has a medium-large bell throat rather similar to, but not identical to the Paxman ‘Europa’.
Its valve compression is excellent, giving a clear and true response in the high register in particular.
Other points worthy of note are:
the unusual ‘bayonet’-type detachable bell flare;
the attractive mother-of-pearl inlays on the valve levers, and
the very practical ‘duck’s-foot’ (‘flipper’).
Engraved on the bell-throat within some floral patterns is :
‘Premiata Fabrica – Riboni & Benicchio, Milano – Super Kalison’
It must be mentioned that the horn’s weight is on the heavy side, at 2.85kg, but the duck’s-foot is helpful in this respect.
It comes with an original - very fine - Kalison mouthpiece of an unusual design, but possessing the correct 'European' taper on its shank, ensuring a good hermetic seal.
This horn requires a mouthpiece with a similar 'E' taper shank in order to play at its best.
Such a mouthpiece ( apart from the Kalison) would be an Alexander, Schmid, Tilz or PHC 'E' cup.
I can supply 2nd-hand examples of such mouthpieces at modest cost.
