PAXMAN 100M TRIPLE
£5,300.00
Maker: PAXMAN, London
Model: 100M compensating triple
Yellow brass, with a gold brass
detachable 'M' bell flare with a nickel
silver garland/kranz, plus an unlacquered,
ungarlanded yellow brass 'M' flare, lighter in weight.
This excellent compensating triple horn, serial
number 78214M, was designed by the late, great
Richard Merewether, Paxman's legendary designer.
The Merewether design incorporates an ingenious
‘dual bore’ system (actually meaning 'dual taper')
where the Bb/F and high Bb horns each have their
own appropriate tapered sections for accurate
response and intonation.
Generally in good playing condition, both
mechanically and acoustically, this superb and
versatile horn plays beautifully over the entire
range, with a very clear, focussed and ringing sound.
Its gold brass flare, although it feels fairly heavy on
the right hand, (535 gm), surprisingly gives a
more 'lively' and tonally 'denser' sound than
the lighter-weight yellow flare (420 gm).
The sheer 'ease' of the top register on the
'high Bb' side is quite astonishing; apart from
'top space G' which is fingered (like a trumpet) on
the 1st valve, all the higher fingerings are exactly
the same as on a regular Bb or low F horn.
It is truly 'the horn that has everything you
will ever need’, especially if you are a high
player.
Cosmetically, most of the lacquer on the horn body
is either missing or visually blemished; it is
a known fact that the lacquer on some Paxman horns
several years ago proved to be less durable than expected.
Therefore, in practical terms, this instrument could be
described as a 95% unlacquered horn with a few small
areas of lacquer remaining.
Its price reflects this, although its playing is not in any way
affected, as previously mentioned.
There are 2 JoyKeys, and a conventional water key on the
3rd slide of the high Bb side.
Case: ProPac with backpack straps.
NB: If only one of the flares is required, the price
will be reduced by £300.
