Maker:   C.G. CONN, Elkhart, USA

Model:   8D

Serial no: E648**

Type:  F/Bb full double

Bell throat profile: L (large)

Alloy: nickel silver

Bell flare: fixed

Valve compression: very good

Water key: conventional type, on the detachable leadpipe.

Lacquer:  about 30% OK

Visual condition: generally good; there are scratches in the

lacquer on the back of the bell, and some surface pitting near the end

of the 1st branch.

Weight: 2.35 kg

Distance from finger hook to 4th valve lever: 11.2 cm.

NB: This is an important specification that is often neglected

or overlooked by horn sellers, makers and even some

teachers. The small hands of a young player usually cannot

cope with a left hand stretch that is too wide (although

there is some scope for a brass technician to re-

position either the finger hook, or, less easily, the 4th valve

lever).

Case:  There is a choice of either a Conn original large, heavy and very

protective case OR a Paxman 'retro' fibreglass case, lighter in weight.

Further details: this ‘classic’ 8D from the

Elkhart era plays superbly over the entire range.

It feels particularly resonant and 'free'

in the low register,  although the high register is 'more than

adequate',  especially on the short fingerings for G# and A.

It has the usual, expected, slightly sharp top B and C.

The F horn's 3rd slide has been 'customised' in yellow brass with

an internal diameter of 12mm rather than 11.89mm, giving

greater clarity and freedom to the 1+3 harmonic series.
