A very unusual natural / hand horn by the

renowned Parisian maker, HALARI (working period 1804 to

post-1873; see photo #4: pp 156-157, Langwill).

It is the only example I have ever seen of a

compact, small size French hand horn with crooks.

In fact, the actual crooks are fairly 'standard' in size, although

with very narrow mouthpiece receivers (too small for most

modern mouthpieces).

It is the BODY ('corpus') that is smaller in diameter (about

31cm) than that of most 19th c. French horns (usually 33-

35cm).

This means that with the tuning slide pushed fully in, the horn's

pitch is sharper than A440; perhaps about A445.  My guess is

that the horn may have been specially made for a town

band, orchestra or other musical ensemble (a French provincial

opera orchestra?) that played at high pitch.
