The 'MEISTER', a good and inexpensive F/Bb

compensating horn, serial number 139145,

was made in the 'WELTKLANG' workshop.

Engraved 'Made in GDR' (the former East Germany)

it is essentially a Meister Hans Hoyer.

Manufactured  as an 'Intermediate' production line

instrument, (rather than hand-made), in order to

keep the price down, it comes with a Paxman 4B

mouthpiece and a good Paxman 'retro' fibreglass case.

Weighing only 2.22 kg, it is quite light for a horn of this type.

Its 4th valve lever,  measuring 11cm

from the finger hook to the 4th valve lever,

is rather more conveniently

placed for a young player's left hand than that of

e.g. an Anborg compensator.

Nevertheless, the horn is probably best suited to a player

with quite a wide hand span rather than a small hand.

The black neoprene finger pads shown in most of the

photos simply raise the height of the valve levers, and can

be removed in a few seconds if not required.

Despite its 'much used'  looks, the horn plays very well

over the entire range, its F side in particular being

more free-blowing than that on many inexpensive

compensators, maybe due to the 'medium-large' bell throat

taper.
